The state association was
organized in Denver in 1880 by J.L. Peabody, E. Milleson and Olive
Wright. It was incorporated as the Colorado State
Bee Keepers' Association in 1888.
CSBA is the oldest and most
widely related beekeeping organization in Colorado.
Originally founded in 1880 to represent the growing interests of
Colorado beekeepers..it's function nowadays is largely as
an umbrella organization for all other local beekeeping
organizations and clubs in the State. CSBA is also the
only organization in Colorado that represents the concerns and
interests of commercial beekeepers in the State. However the
number of commercial operators has been slowly declining both in the
organization and State in recent years. The demographics
of CSBA which used to be around 70% commercial..is now down to about
40%. The remaining 60% of CSBA members are either hobbyists or
small side-line beekeepers.
All dues and monies collected by the
CSBA go towards educational and associated social functions @
meetings. By far..the largest expenses incurred..are in
securing the venues and nationally renowned and respected figures
within the beekeeping community to speak at meetings. The
high level of cutting-edge information available at CSBA
meetings often provides one of the only opportunities
for local beekeepers to learn about events and
concerns within the larger beekeeping community.
The principal concern of CSBA is
to provide educational information, updates and support to all
beekeepers in Colorado. This is accomplished
mainly through two (2) annual meetings: one in December..the other
in June of each year. Specific information on meetings:
places, dates, speakers, et al. are posted on the CSBA
Website. The other educational vehicle used by CSBA is through
the quarterly publication of B-Notes..a beekeeping newsletter
sponsored by the CSBA. More recently..the development of the
CSBA Website is provided as a third avenue for
gaining beekeeping information and knowledge within
Colorado .
